In 1858 Frederick Law Omstead si Calvert Vaux au cerrut acest teren unde au creat un imens plaman verde, cu lacuri, campuri si peste 500.000 arbori si arbusti. In urmatorii ani s-au cret zone de joaca, piste de patinaj, campuri de tenis, terenuri de fotbal si zone pentru sah si cricket.
